Carlile Patchen & Murphy Announces Passing of Former Managing Partner

With deep sorrow, Carlile Patchen & Murphy LLP (CPM) announces the death of our partner, friend and mentor, Robert B. Barnett, Jr., a well-known and respected attorney in the legal community. He was a beloved member of our firm, where he had worked for 45 years.

Bob, 71, passed away on Sept. 20, 2020. He is survived by Julie M. Barnett, and his stepdaughter, Katherine (“Kate”) Ersly.

“All of us at Carlile Patchen & Murphy mourn Bob’s passing,” said Bryan K. Hogue, Managing Partner of CPM.

“Bob had a commanding presence—in our firm and in the legal community, and he was recognized as a great legal scholar,” continued Bryan. “He served the firm for many years as a managing partner and was a crucial part of CPM’s success. He was a well-respected expert in estate and trust planning and probate law. A man of great intellect, he was also known for his quick wit and his welcoming nature, and we will all greatly miss his larger-than-life personality.”

After graduating from Fairview High School in 1967, Bob moved to Columbus to study at The Ohio State University. He was a proud member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and earned his Bachelor Science in Business Administration in 1971. He went on to study at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and earned his law degree in 1975. Upon graduation, he joined CPM, where he spent his entire career and practicing law in the areas of estate and trust planning, probate and general business and tax planning law. He grew our firm’s estate planning group from two attorneys to 13. Bob represented individuals, executives and family-owned companies, counseling them on their business and estate planning needs. He also served as a Mediator for probate and estate disputes.

A member of the Ohio State Bar Association, Bob served as an emeritus member of the Section Council governing board of the Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Committee. He was a long-time member of the Columbus Bar Association, where he served as Chairman of the Taxation, Estate and Gift Tax and Probate Court Committees, as well as a member of the Ethics Committee.

Over the years, Bob earned much professional recognition for his work. He had been a Fellow of The American College of Trust & Estate Counsel since 1989, and he was selected by Ohio Super Lawyers magazine to the “Super Lawyers” list from 2004-2020 and by Columbus Business First as one of “Columbus’ Top Lawyers.” In addition, Bob was AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell®, was a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law by the Ohio State Bar Association and was listed in the “Best Lawyers in America” list by Best Lawyers® from 2006-2020.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mid-Ohio Food Collective or The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held once the pandemic has subsided. An online guestbook is available at Schoedinger Funeral & Creation Services website.
